Are you thinking about visiting the charming coastal towns of Thanet this February half term? With beautiful destinations like Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Westgate-on-Sea, and Birchington, there’s so much to explore and enjoy. Whether you’re looking for cultural attractions, scenic walks, or fun family experiences, staying with SoHot Stays is the perfect way to make the most of your trip.

Margate: A Creative Seaside Hub

I just love the creativity that pulses through Margate. A must-visit spot is the Turner Contemporary. If you’ve got a little one who’s into art, this gallery is perfect. Not only do they host some fascinating exhibitions, but there are workshops that engage younger visitors too. And with free entry, it’s an inspiring stop for the whole family. The views of the North Sea are stunning too!

Another thing I highly recommend is exploring the Margate Caves. These tunnels have been transformed into an underground art space, with vibrant murals covering the walls, and it’s such a unique experience. An adventure for the kids and a chance for a little education.

Even in the colder months, Margate’s Main Sands are beautiful. I love going for a walk along the beach, feeling the sea breeze, and collecting shells. It’s perfect for kite flying or just letting the kids run wild. And, while Dreamland may be closed for the season, it’s always worth keeping an eye out for any special half-term events or pop-up attractions that might be happening.

When it comes to food, there are so many great places to try. Angela’s is a favourite of mine for sustainable seafood, or you could grab a bite at Buoy and Oyster, which boasts delicious food with sea views. For a special treat, check out Dory’s – it’s intimate and their seafood dishes are a work of art. Oh, and don’t forget to grab a drink at The Sun Deck while you watch the sunset!

Ramsgate: A Historic Coastal Gem

Ramsgate has a special charm, and one of its highlights is the Royal Harbour. It’s the only Royal Harbour in the UK, and there’s just something magical about strolling along, admiring the yachts, and soaking in the history. It’s a great spot for some photos too!

The Ramsgate Tunnels are another must-see. I found it fascinating learning about the tunnels that locals used during WWII. It’s a glimpse into history, and worth a visit if you’re into heritage.

If you’re looking for something cosy, Ramsgate has plenty of lovely cafés overlooking the harbour. It’s a great way to warm up with a hot drink after a stroll along the marina, where you can watch the boats docked and enjoy the sea breeze.

For food, I have a few favourites. The Royal Harbour Brasserie is perfect for fresh seafood with a view, or if you’re craving a sweet treat, pop by The Modern Boulangerie for some artisan pastries. If you’re in the mood for a cocktail, Little Ships Restaurant & Café has you covered. And for a fine dining experience, don’t miss Stark – it’s Michelin-starred for a reason!

Broadstairs: A Charming Coastal Escape

Broadstairs is another place close to my heart. Viking Bay is such a beautiful beach. In winter, it’s still lovely for a stroll, and the kids can play by the sea or build sandcastles. The cliffs that surround the bay are perfect for a scenic walk.

If you’re a literary lover like me, then a visit to the Dickens House Museum is a must. It’s a small but charming spot that celebrates the town’s connection to Charles Dickens, with plenty of insights into his life and works.

Broadstairs is also full of independent shops, cafés, and bakeries that I can never resist popping into. My favourite thing is grabbing some homemade fudge or a pastry, especially after a lovely walk along the cliffs.

And if you’re looking for some quiet moments, Louisa Bay and the surrounding coastal cliffs are perfect for a peaceful escape into nature.

For dining, there are some fantastic spots. Albarino Tapas is ideal for sharing some authentic Spanish dishes, and Wyatt & Jones is great for fine dining. When you need a pick-me-up, head to The Old Bakehouse for a coffee and cake. If you’re looking to indulge, Restaurant 81 is a great choice with its elegant ambiance and beautifully crafted dishes.

Westgate-on-Sea: A Peaceful Retreat

If you’re after some peace and quiet, Westgate-on-Sea is the place to go. St Mildred’s Bay is a gorgeous, family-friendly beach, ideal for a relaxing stroll. It’s quieter than the other towns, but that’s what I love about it.

I’m a huge fan of the Thanet Coastal Path, which connects Westgate-on-Sea to other nearby towns. It’s perfect for a scenic walk, and you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning views of the coastline.

After a long walk, you’ll want to relax, and there are plenty of cosy cafés in Westgate-on-Sea where you can grab a drink and snack. The Carlton Cinema is another great option – it’s an independent cinema, so you can enjoy a family-friendly film in a charming, intimate setting.

For food, West Bay Café is lovely, with beautiful seaside views, and the swan pub  is a fun place for a casual pub meal. If you’re in the mood for something more upscale, check out Quince – it’s sophisticated and their dishes are always top-notch.

Birchington: A Quaint Village by the Sea

Birchington is another little gem. Minnis Bay is a beautiful spot for families, with its expansive beach and breathtaking sunsets. It’s perfect for a winter walk and nature spotting.

If you’re after something a bit more educational, you can head to Quex Park and the Powell-Cotton Museum. The park itself is gorgeous, and the museum has a fascinating collection of natural history exhibits.

Birchington’s village centre is charming, with independent shops and eateries to explore. One of my favourite things to do is just wander around, stopping for a coffee or some homemade treats.

If you’re looking for a fun activity, Quex Adventure Golf is great for a bit of competitive fun, and it’s perfect for all ages.

For a bite to eat, try The Minnis Bay Bar & Brasserie for great food with stunning views. Strawberry Fields Café is another lovely spot for coffee, and for something a little more luxurious, Quex Barn serves high-quality dishes featuring locally sourced ingredients.
