MARGATE

Margate is a town in Kent, England’s Isle of Thanet area, however it is not actually an island. Its name was given as “Meregate” in 1264 and “Margate” in 1299, respectively, but the spelling persisted into the current era. The term is said to relate to a pool gate or opening in a cliff where water pools can be found, and swimmers can frequently jump in. Chalk, a fossil-bearing rock, makes up the Isle of Thanet’s cliffs.
